Snake Calzone Vegan

If you are looking for awesome Halloween food ideas, Google images is where it’s at. I found the inspiration for this guy there. Most of the recipes and ideas are not vegan friendly, but they are usually easily made vegan. I saw a couple images for a snake calzone and knew I had to recreate it.

It is easy to wing calzones without a set recipe. It is also easy to stuff the calzone with whatever you please. Just be careful not to overfill or under fill. Below is what we used to fill our snake.

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place olive oil, 1 tablespoon minced garlic, mushrooms, and onions in a sauté pan. Cook on low/medium heat covered for about ten minutes to until tender. Stir the veggie mix on occasion. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Roll out dough on a flowered surface. To make the snake shape the dough must be longer and skinnier than a usual calzone.DSC_0288
  3. Layer ingredients along the side closest to you.  Layer filling going the long way and in the following order, 1/2 of the cheese, then the veggie mix, chunks of meatball, bacon, sauce and the last layer of cheese. Reserve one slice of bacon for the tongue. Roll the calzone starting with filled side and keeping each roll tight. You should be able to get it to roll over twice. Keep seem along the bottom of the snake. Once the dough has been rolled, it is easier too squeeze and twist into the snake shape. Squeeze a few inches down the roll to create a head shape and give his tail some extra rolling.
  1. Brush the body with the dairy free butter and the remaining minced garlic. Bake in oven for about 25 minutes or until a golden crust has formed.
  2. Remove from oven and place the olives on the snakes head for the eyes. Cut the vegan bacon into a fork shaped tongue and place under head beginning for the tongue.

Side note: Feel free to add olives into the calzone to prevent waste. I am not a fan of them so omitted olives inside and just used them eyeballs.
